The origin of the Caminito del Rey dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. The Chorro Hydroelectric Society built this footbridge in the Gaitanes Gorge between 1901 and 1905, with the aim of connecting the Salto del Chorro and the Salto del Gaitanejo, two very important points of energy production. With this infrastructure, both spaces were also connected to the Chorro train station, thus facilitating the arrival of materials and workers.
Once the origin of the Caminito del Rey is known, it is worth noting the reasons that make this impressive place receive this name. Years after finishing the construction of this engineering work, in 1921, the then King Alfonso XIII traveled to the place to inaugurate the Conde del Guadalhorce dam. To get to it, he had to cross the aerial walkway built over the Gaitanes Gorge. This made the place receive its current name “Caminito del Rey” and gain great popularity. Without a doubt, an aerial path over an impressive gorge, at an average distance of 100 meters above the ground, which attracted the interest of many people.
Since the middle of the last century the situation has changed and the Caminito had to face a period in which the lack of maintenance made it become a place with little traffic, difficult to access. In 2006, a plan was launched with the aim of restoring it and allowing anyone interested to enjoy it again. Since 2015, the Caminito del Rey has been reopened to the general public.
The Caminito del Rey is located in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Natural Park. Human presence has been documented in this place since the Palaeolithic, when different populations concentrated around water resources such as the Guadalhorce River itself. Proof of this is the impressive Paleolithic Cave of Ardales. After that, since the Roman arrival to the peninsula, it has been a territory always occupied by human beings. Constructions such as the Mozarabic Rock Church of Bobastro remain from medieval times. The arrival of the railway in the 19th century completely changed the place, since from that moment its energy or geological resources began to be exploited.
Since the last century it has been a territory whose natural resources have been exploited in an important way, from the use of waterfalls to generate energy to the cultivation of different lands or the use of swamps and gorges for various leisure activities.
With regard to the flora and fauna around the Caminito del Rey, it is worth noting the presence of easily spotted mountain goats, as well as blackbirds, hawks, eagles, griffon vultures or kestrels. All these species coexist in a territory plagued by pines, junipers, rosemary, marjoram, esparto grass or flycatchers.
Currently the Caminito del Rey is one of the most visited points in Andalusia. Since its opening to the public in 2015, the number of visitors has not gone beyond increasing, becoming a space of incredible tourist and natural value. In addition, the Caminito del Rey is a space of great value for the region in which it is located, as it is a point that reveals the beauty of the surroundings of Álora, el Chorro or Ardales and the entire Guadalhorce Valley.
There have been several awards that the Caminito del Rey has received in the last 7 years, all of them highlighting how this work of engineering is a place where the values of responsible and sustainable tourism are present. In addition, its restoration has been enormously lauded. It should be noted that a visitor reception and interpretation center will be set up shortly.
Currently, the Caminito del Rey is a candidate to be recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Specifically, they want it to be recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Hydroelectric Industrial Heritage.
To this end, the aim is to highlight above all three landmarks that make up this place: the El Chorro and Gaitanejo Dams, the footbridges of the El Chorro hydroelectric waterfall and the El Chorro railway station, together with its posts on the Gaitanes. These infrastructures, unique in the world due to the natural setting in which they are located, are the main points to take into account the Caminito’s candidacy.
